PAPAKUNA (potatoes in Kichwa) is a multi-language theatrical creation project that seeks to rescue and socialize the value of the diversity of native potatoes in Ecuador as part of our cultural and food heritage, in a context of gradual loss of native seeds, increase in monoculture in the countryside and loss of food sovereignty.
The creative process begins with field research in various communities in the Guamote canton, Chimborazo province, the largest potato-producing region in the country and the area that preserves the largest number of native species.
The research focuses on the identification of native potato species that are still cultivated and the cultural practices associated with them, i.e. myths, legends, stories, rituals and songs.
